“UNFAIR: Unequal, Onesided, Unjust”

May 13th, 2009

Isn’t it common practice when marking a competition to take the Candidate with the highest score from each Judge as “winner” for that Judge? And then see which Candidate won the most overall Judges votes? This is a standard of Marking / Scoring a Contest that is wildly practised and FAIR.

“FAIR: FREE FROM FAVORITISM OR SELF-INTEREST OR BIAS OR DECEPTION; CONFORMING WITH ESTABLISHED STANDARDS OR RULES.”

Every person has their own marking system. An individuals marking system should not be so radical as to affect the entire results of a competition. If you have 4 Judges, you develop an Average. Some Judges may be tougher, some, generous. Otherwise, what is to stop one Judge controlling an entire competition by marking a candidate so low, they would lose regardless of the other Judges choices, especially when as many as 25 points are at stake?

Or, what is to stop a Judge from using an obscure individual marking system, reducing the FAIRNESS of Judging? Obviously, this completely diminishes the prospect of fair marking; by allowing one Judge to decide the fate of a competition when it should be 4?

JUST. A. THOUGHT. WORTH. CONSIDERING.

The below score sheet (which expands when clicked on) shows myself as receiving 4 top scores from Judges; Piper, Alejandro, Shanti and Contestants. The other winning contestant scored 3 top scores from Adam, Alejandro and Contestants. 4 against 3? You go figure..

OR, you could add up the scores, number by number, therefore letting one Judges low mark affect the entire results of the competition. This seems like the Fairest and most appropriately balanced choice does it not?

This Judge didn’t even score based on the score sheet.

Three of the Contestants scores weren’t counted. One isn’t even mentioned on the Scoresheet (from team mate Emma who submitted them by youtube email as instructed to), the other two weren’t counted “because they didn’t score all 4 finalists; only scoring 3 out of the 4 would have thrown off averages”. This makes absolutely no sense. You can still create an average with uneven Scores and it was not listed anywhere that Contestants had to Judge all 4 finalists.

“UNFAIR:

adjective 1. biased, prejudiced, unjust, onesided, partial, partisan, arbitrary, discriminatory, bigoted, inequitable, unequal

adjective 2. unscrupulous, crooked, (informal) dishonest, unethical, wrongful, unprincipled, dishonourable, unsporting”

To add insult to injury, the deadline for Contestants scores was the same Deadline as for the 4 finalists to submit their video entry. AND, some of the Contestants do not live by PST and were waiting for my video to be submitted in order to score. I personally edited my video throughout the night for it to be submitted on time.

Two contestants were over the time limit. Petty as it may be, there was a time limit and I spent several hours editing my video so it was not even 1 second over that limit. One contestants video was very late but it was still counted. Therefore, they should not have discriminated any late Contestant Scores.

I like and respect the chosen “winner”. She is sweet and kind and hasn’t a bad bone in her body. She is a deserving winner and we all were. But she won by a single Judge and an unjust marking system.

I CANNOT let this go. I feel cheated and although I’m trying to make genuine amends with people for my missile launch (Shanti, I am genuinely sorry) and the hurtful things I said in my anger, I will always feel bitter about this because I am hurt and feel cheated.

This stings to the point where I feel anger, injustice and tears simultaneously. It reminds me of all the times I have been cheated from something rightfully mine; like the time my ex-boyfriend stole my wallet or the time I phoned my old Utility Bill Company 12 times over the two final months in flat for the “final bill” they never sent, only to be sued a year later for not paying it.

Call me a sore loser. Call me WHATEVER the fuck you like. If you have an ounce of reasoning you will see sense and truth in what I am saying.

Ultimately Karma is a bitch. That is all I can say.
